WHY ISIS TARGETS TEENAGERS
In recent years, ISIS has begun targeting teenagers as potential recruits. In 2015, three teenagers from London became famous when they were able to travel to Syria to join the group, and other teenagers or women in their early twenties have done the same. There are a few reasons why ISIS targets people at such a young age. One is that teenagers are often in search of meaning or community, and many feel isolated or misunderstood. ISIS is able to play on insecurity and make recruits feel they belong. This is true of both teenage boys and girls; boys are recruited as fighters and ISIS often leans on their sense of religious obligation to get them to join, while girls are recruited as brides, and often a softer tactic is taken to convince them that life under ISIS will benefit them. Teenagers and young women are less likely to have health problems that would make it difficult for them to have children, so they can help grow the group through childbirth. They are also easier to manipulate and control once they arrive in Syria, as they may not be aware of resources available to them if they escape ISIS territory. Because of this, teenagers are ideal recruits for the group and highly vulnerable to their techniques.
